Surgical Missionaries Bring Hope To Peruvian Children
Spending your vacation time donating medical services to sick children in Peru may not top everyone’s list of travel destinations, but for a surgical missionary team from St. Louis, it is a priority. In January, 1998, the 10-member team made the 6,000 mile trek to Lima, Peru, where they spent six days operating and teaching at Instituto de Salud del Nino (National Children’s Hospital). Aiding the hospital's dedicated but over-worked staff, the team ultimately completed 31 ENT operations and handled or assisted with nine plastic/reconstructive surgery cases. Dr. Simo continues to travel with surgical missionary teams.
AAFPRS Is Taking a Stand on Domestic Violence
The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) is the first surgical group to take a firm stand and become involved in helping individuals of domestic violence break out of the cycle of violence, enhance their self-esteem and rebuild their lives. Many victims of domestic violence receive facial injuries and are not financially able to have these injuries adequately repaired. AAFPRS offers complimentary consultation and surgery to victims of domestic violence. Face-to-Face is a humanitarian and educational surgical exchange program conducted under the auspices of the Educational and Research Foundation for the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
